Oral Surgery
What Is Oral Surgery?
Oral surgery refers to any invasive procedure performed on your teeth, gums, jawbones, or other oral structures to restore optimum health. These procedures can restore lost oral functions and also enhance smile aesthetics. Oral surgeries are carried out by qualified dental professionals who have received special education and training in this field. At our practice, we have a team of expert oral surgeons who have years of experience dealing with complex surgical cases.
How Should I Prepare For Oral Surgery?
The thought of undergoing any surgical procedure can be stressful, including oral surgery. Rest assured that your care is in the best hands at our practice. Our team will ensure that you remain comfortable throughout the treatment process. Being prepared before surgery can ease concerns, which is why we discuss all procedure details during your initial consultation.
To prepare for the procedure:
- Eat before the procedure if you are not undergoing IV sedation
- Avoid eating several hours before the procedure if you will be sedated
- Continue prescribed medications (e.g., for diabetes or high blood pressure) as directed by your physician
- Plan to take 1-2 days off work or school after the procedure
How Long Until I Start Feeling Better After Oral Surgery?
The recovery period depends on the procedure performed. A simple tooth extraction typically heals within 10-14 days. Surgical extractions may take longer as they involve gum incisions and bone removal.
After the procedure, a pressure gauze will be placed to control bleeding. You may experience some pain or swelling during the first 48 hours, but these symptoms will gradually subside as the area heals.
Our surgeon will prescribe medications to manage post-surgical symptoms. If swelling occurs, apply an ice pack to the affected area for 10-15 minutes at a time. We also recommend rinsing your mouth with warm salt water to keep the area clean and reduce the risk of infection.
What Foods Are Good To Eat After Oral Surgery?
After oral surgery, start with a soft diet since the surgical site will be tender. Suitable foods include mashed potatoes, porridge, scrambled eggs, yogurt, milkshakes, and boiled vegetables.
Cool foods are recommended during the initial recovery period, as they help reduce bleeding and swelling.
As healing progresses, gradually return to a normal diet. Avoid hot, spicy, hard, or sticky foods during recovery. Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice daily to prevent contamination.
Can I Smoke After Having Oral Surgery?
Smoking negatively affects healing by restricting blood flow, irritating tissues, and increasing the risk of complications such as dry socket.
Avoid smoking for at least 3 to 5 days after surgery to ensure proper healing.
